Mental illnesses are medical problems that can affect children and adults by changing their thinking, mood, behavior and ability to cope. There are many types of mental illnesses such as depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, ADD/ADHD, obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety and others.
Symptoms are different from person to person. Some of the signs of a mental illness may be:
- Feeling sad and losing the desire to do things you love
- Having aches and pains you cannot explain
- Feeling angry, forgetful, worried, or scared
- Having trouble with work, school, or tasks like taking care of your children
- Smoking, drinking, or using drugs more than normal
- Having very bad mood swings
- Thinking of harming yourself or others
- Having problems with family or friends
Mental health conditions also can worsen diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

People living with a mental illness need help and hope. They need people that support them and their family.
If you do not treat mental illness, the symptoms can become worse and start to affect your body and your life. It is important to understand that recovery from mental illness takes time. With proper care many people can get better.
